Whatever Happened to William Marion Cummings?



They say my great-grandfather William Marion Cummings got into a quarrel with a neighbor over a fence in the 1880s, there was gun play, and fearing the law on account of no witnesses, he packed a bag and left his family. He was never seen again. I think this is the kind of sad story you tell young children to help them understand and to comfort them as to why their father is not with them. Whatever the origin of this story, it denotes a sad time for a young white family living in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma.). If Cummings survived and possibly thrived after this event, DNA may be the only way to address this mystery. This project is on-going, and there are some very promising leads.
